Pope Julius II commissioned Michelangelo to build his tomb in 1505 and it was finally completed in 1545; Julius II died in 1513 The initial design by Michelangelo was massive and called for over 40 statues. The statue of Moses would have been placed on a tier about 3.74 meters high, opposite a figure of St. Paul.

Jan 09, 2017 · The sculpture of Moses is the centerpiece of what was intended to be the tomb of Pope Julius II Della Rovere (1503-1513). Michelangelo's first sketches for the tomb included, somewhat unrealistically, forty statues, most of them life-size or larger.
Michelangelo purposely created demure, even diminutive females that represent Faith and Good Works, or the active and the contemplative life. Originally, the figure of Moses was to be flanked on either side by two slaves struggling to free themselves from their bonds, but Pope Julius apparently objected to their writhing bodies, too sensual and therefore unsuitable for a Pope’s tomb.
This is the last of Michelangelo’s sculptures created for the tomb commissioned by Pope Julius II in 1506. Because Julius wanted his monument to be exemplary, Michelangelo planned a burial chamber that would be a truly architectonic structure, with statues of the Old and New Testament figures at different levels.
